"DECADES OF SOUL"

The Groove Junkies

We are very passionate about all things soulful. Our motivation for The Groove Junkie events is to play incredible soul music for all you eclectic soulies out there. We play a wide range of all things soulful, but there are no set limitations for our DJ’s- they all play from the heart and for the people.

We encourage and support an open music policy. We play an extensive assortment of soulful tunes that resonate from the 70’s onwards, and all genres of soul music. The Groove Junkies take pride in their philosophy that the events are quite simply "                                                                                                                                  all about the music".

We exist to supply for all you Groove Junkies out there that are anticipating your next great fix of soulful bliss.

Everyone is welcome to come along, it is a very friendly crowd and we love seeing new faces- whether you are an avid "Groove Junkie", or you are simply looking for a fun night out with a memorable atmosphere and superb collection of soulful music to dance to.

As Berry Gordy once said, "It’s what’s in the GROOVE that counts!"

I first discovered Northern Soul in the early 70's in the local youth club. The older boys were dancing to a genre of music I had not experienced before, and from that moment on I was hooked. I had previously bought records, but this one night ignited my love for the music and record collecting. It was the beginnings of becoming a Groove Junkie.

Thousands of records and dances later... fast forward to the Modern Room at a Soul Weekender in 2000. I was persuaded, under protest to experience the "dark side". Just like thirty years ago at my first Northern Soul Nighter, I was hooked and excited about the new and refreshing sounds. Something magical had happened, and I had seen the light! You could say that I am a born again Soulie.

Diane, my wife and I conceived The Groove Junkies some time ago. We were growing increasingly frustrated that there was very little chance of hearing anything Modern played out in these parts. We wanted to start an event that covered all genres of Soul music, especially Modern grooves. We felt it was extremely important to apply a flexible music policy for both the DJ's and crowds needs. Every DJ is able to play whatever he/she believes to be appropriate for the movers and groovers on the night. This policy has encouraged a wider spectrum of music and an outstanding quality of Soul and rare grooves.

I was brought up listening to a mixture of Northern Soul, Motown, Stax and even a bit of George Benson. I was always in awe of the thousands of records my uncle had stacked away in hand painted wooden crates. As soon as I was old enough to get a part time job I was spending my weekly wages on Records.

My musical tastes span the whole soul spectrum from 70's soul, Northern, Jazz-funk, 80's boogie and even R&B and Soulful house.

My place in the Groove Junkies came as a matter of chance when I came accross a flyer for the last outing and I contacted John about tickets, and as they say the rest is history.

Soul music runs through my veins so to get the chance be part of the Groove Junkies was something I couldn't turn down.

Bex

I was force- fed Northern Soul from birth, by my dad Johnny H. I have early memories of listening to the music in the back of the car, enjoying the music and asking for the snake one again. (I was only 6, but what was my dad's excuse- he had it on tape!). I realised how different and special the music was as I grew older. I always wondered why my dad danced so strangely at parties and discos.

It wasn't until I attended my first nighter with him at Bisley when I was about 13 when I realised he was amongst his own people because everybody seemed to dance in the same kind of fashion. Many Nighters and Weekenders later I am a huge fan of all things soulful. I appreciate that it is an underground movement, I feel honoured to be a part of it and lucky to be born to a self proclaimed Groove Junkie.

No other genre of music gives me shivers and makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end. My mum, my sister and I, dragged my dad into the Modern Room at a weekender because the music and atmosphere were so good; they were almost a powerful and physical presence in the room. From that night onward, I was converted and I became a Modern Soul fan and a Groove Junkie.

Moldie

I met Moldie years ago at a nighter down in Gossport. I knew from our first meeting that we had a shared passion for Soul music. Years later, he is still searching for those illusive choons.

His record collection is one of the best I know, covering sixties, Northern, and RnB, right through to Modern day.

Moldie plays from the heart and lives and breathes Soul music. Someone once told me never to tell Moldie about the details of the records I was hunting down because in a week he would have a copy. I asked Moldie about this and he said "that's an absolute lie! It usually only takes me a few days!" LOL.

I knew from our first meeting that Moldie was a Groove Junkie. Moldie's knowledge of  music and his ability to put a great Modern set together are just few of the reasons that explain why he is an asset to the Groove Junkie crew.
